Do you have one child that challenges you more than your other children? I do. I have three children, two sons and a daughter. My daughter is the middle child and has always been very creative. This is a good thing and will most likely be an asset for her as an adult; however as a child it means that she demands more attention and time. Not only does she make unique requests, but she also wants to be involved in fulfilling them.

When she was ten years old we went to see a production of the Christmas Carol at one of the metropolitan theaters. The production was excellent; it was a great family outing. After we saw the production she wanted to have a copy of the book. We bought this for her as a stocking stuffer for Christmas that year. In the copy of the book the illustration of the ghost from things yet to come was drawn in the classic grim reaper costume. She decided as soon as she saw the illustration that this is what she wanted to be for Halloween the next year. I did not look for a grim reaper costume because my thought was that she would change her mind several times in the ten months before Halloween came around. The month before Halloween she was still insistent that she wanted a grim reaper costume. My thought was to use black material that we could drape and pin around her, however she wanted the hood and she wanted a way to wear it so she could see, but no one could see her face.

There were grim reaper costumes available for adults so I bought her one and we shortened it so that she could walk without having to hold it up. There was a large hood on the costume, but you could still see her face. I looked for black sheer fabric that we could sew into the hood, but all the pieces I found were either so sheer that you could still see her face or they were too opaque to see through. I bought the sheer fabric as well as black face paint. I sewed the fabric into the hood several inches back from the edge and then we painted her face black. This worked great because when you looked at her you had no idea of who it was. We also painted her hands white so they had a ghostly appearance. She was going to a party at a neighbor’s house. I sewed Velcro around the sheer material so that she would be able to pull it away from her face in order to eat and drink. Throughout all of the construction of the costume she was in the room with me making sure that it was exactly how she wanted it. She wants to learn to sew so that she will be able to make her own costumes in the future. I am sure they will turn out great because she is a perfectionist.

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. Usually, I spend weeks and weeks preparing for it. I make the best Halloween costume I can, and I usually get some very positive reactions. A Grim Reaper costume is actually a pretty easy thing to assemble. If you want to keep it very basic, you can get by with a cloak with a dark hood and some face paint. Ad a scythe and you’ve gone a bit further. For my Grim Reaper costume, however, I wanted to get a better effect. I wanted to look truly creepy. I decided to shave my head and paint my entire face white with black outlines around my eye sockets and my nose. I painted my hands in a similar style to give a skeleton look to my fingers. It was done in a subtle way – I have a friend who is a great make up artist – so that it wasn’t immediately apparent. At first glance, I looked a little pale and sickly. It was only at second glance when I appeared as if my bones were showing through.

Needless to say, my Grim Reaper costume was a big success. Grim Reaper costumes and other distinctly Halloween outfits usually are. Even if you don’t put that much effort into it, people love to see ghosts and goblins and ghouls of all kinds. I was lucky enough to be the only person in the party I was at with a Grim Reaper costume. I had been to Halloween parties before with three or four different people all dressed up as the Grim Reaper, and I was afraid that that was going to be the deal today. It is nice to be at least somewhat unique, even if your costume is not very original. And thanks to my friend, I had one of the best Grim Reaper costumes there were. Few people take time to get the makeup right, and doing so made me outshine most of the other Grim Reapers who were no doubt were out that night.

In the late 1970s, a new youth craze emerged in England. They were called Goths and they listened to Goth bands and wore Goth costume. The movement spread to the US and parts of Europe, Germany in particular. It was influenced by Gothic novels of the past and horror films, especially those involving vampires. Winona Ryder played a Goth in Tim Burton’s Beetle juice. Goths started to appear in TV shows too. Symbols of horror were used in their music venues, such as bats and cobwebs.

The bands of the genre had wonderfully macabre names, such as Dead Can Dance, Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy and Southern Death Cult. The most successful were Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure.

The Goth look was such a distinctive one that many young people were picked on and bullied. A lot of people who felt insecure with their looks felt at home in Goth costume. The clothing is easy, too, especially for the woman. As with most Americans, I have been exposed to Native American Indians in the literature and film I have watched since I was very young. Also like most Americans, these books and films have given me some pretty strange ideas. Our portrayal of American Indian culture is hardly a universally positive thing. It is interesting to learn about the lives of the peoples who lived here before I did.

The Daredevil comic uses martial art in the stories, as Daredevil is an expert. When he’s not fighting crime, he does find time for romance but his relationships have brought him heartache. His affairs include one with super heroine The Black Widow. It seems that Daredevil will never settle down with kids and a picket fence. His women tend to end up dead, almost dead or they cannot cope with him and they leave. Murdock also has a day job as a respected attorney and runs a legal advice center for people who can’t pay.

Many different writers and artists have worked on the strip over the years. It didn’t achieve popularity until Frank Miller contributed in the late 1970s. Miller is the king of the comic strip and he brought the noir style, which he is famous for. He also put ninjas into the mix. Film director Kevin Smith of Clerks and Dogma fame, also wrote stories for the Daredevil comic.

The popularity of Daredevil continues, although the 2003 movie titled Daredevil did not do well at the box office. Our hero was played by Ben Affleck and it co-starred Jennifer Garner and Colin Farrell.
