Nancy asks…
What’s the difference between out of fashion and old fashioned?
She wears really old–fashioned clothes!
The clothes she wears are out of fashion!
Thanks.
admin answers:
Old fashion is just old and out of fashion is just not in fashion now
Out of fashion could be wearing something not trendy at the time, but is trendy a year later
Old fashion is wearing something that was trendy before, but not anymore

Robert asks…
Where are some old fashioned English places to visit like Canterbury in Kent?
We have visited Canterbury several times and love the way it has very old fashioned windy streets, interesting shops that sell chocolate, cheese etc, beautiful places to see like the Cathedral, and lovely restaurants. We particularly like the fact that the buildings are so old fashioned and visually attractive as it is such a contrast to where we live in London. Any ideas of other old fashioned places we can go in England that are similar? Preferably somewhere in the South of England as we find it hard to drive too far away. Thanks.
admin answers:
Winchester has a cathedral and several museums. It has a high street that looks like it should be on a chocolate box with lots of interesting friendly small shops. There are lots of places to eat. Near Christmas there is a Christmas market behind the cathedral (not cheap!) It’s easy to reach by car (M3) or train (Waterloo).
Salisbury is also nice. It’s bigger than Winchester but feels more like a market town than a cathedral city. The cathedral and its cathedral close is beautiful. It retains old fashioned high street shopping and there are lots of places to eat. It’s not far from Stonehenge. It’s also easy to reach by road (M3/A303) or train (Waterloo).

We always thought modern liberated women are getting rid of tradition be it old fashioned roles, or marriage and the like. Could it be, that as time moves on tradition is getting rid of modern liberated career women, since a lot of them eithier dont marry or have children if they have children its one child and men are favouring traditional women even if they have to get them from the other end of the world ?
Why. Why not ?
admin answers:
For one, a woman can be a modern woman with career goals and have a sense of old fashioned tradition. Now, to determine what “tradition” is, you either mean “society’s” version of tradition or traditions that is customary within the family unit, meaning, raised on family expectations and the traditions that the family set.
In our Family unit, it’s a tradition to start up your career first, marry, then have children. For some odd reason, some are still stuck in their careers to ever marry and have children, while the rest didn’t go according to the Family tradition, they had their Family first, married, and struggled for their career.
Oh well, who’s to say. Tradition is like a trend. In one day, out the next.

What is a recipe for old Fashioned confectioners sugar icing?
My grandpa’s birthday is coming up and we offered to make him a cake and he asked for a simple white cake and an old fashioned sugar water and milk icing that his mom made once he said there was a ratio but he didn’t remember it any more. Please help!!!
admin answers:
Here’s an “old fashioned” type of COOKED buttercream frosting. It’s VERY vanilla, so it would be perfectly suited to a white cake……Enjoy!!!
3 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup water
1 cup egg whites (you can purchase “just eggwhites” now, near the eggs in the grocery)
1 1/2 pounds butter (6 sticks), softened
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Special Equipment: candy thermometer
Directions
Mix 3 cups sugar with water in a small, heavy saucepan. Cook over high heat until syrup reaches 248 degrees F on a candy thermometer. Watch it closely as it gets close to temperature; it will go quickly at the end.
While syrup is cooking, beat egg whites with 2 tablespoons sugar until stiff but not dry.* (Extra- fine granulated sugar works best). Turn mixer off until syrup is ready.
With mixer running, pour syrup into the egg whites in a thin, steady stream, making sure not to pour directly onto beaters. Be careful, as hot syrup can burn if you. Continue to beat mixture until it is no longer hot.
Allow to cool to room temperature and then beat in the softened butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, until all is incorporated. (Salted butter works fine. If you are using unsalted butter, add 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste.) The mixture will become thin and may look curdled at first, but will then become smooth as it beats. Lastly, beat in the vanilla all at once. (Use the best vanilla you can find. Artificial and white “vanilla” will ruin the delicate flavor.)
If not using at once, refrigerate the buttercream until needed. It will keep for 1 week in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator. To use, just bring it back to room temperature and re-beat to restore the texture. If you have trouble with the texture, getting it to room temperature and extra beating are the keys to making it smooth. Enjoy on your favorite cake!

What is the difference between being old fashioned and decent?
A lot of my colleagues wear very short shirts and dresses, but ask as to why I choose to wear knee length only, they say to me that I am old fashioned, why is this?
admin answers:
Old-fashioned usually implies more than simply knee-length dresses and skirts. Many women wear knee-length skirts and dresses and do not look even remotely old-fashoned because of the cut, color, and fabric of their clothing, as well as their hair. There are, on the other hand, dresses still available that scream “this was my mother’s dress, and I kept it when she died.” Pay close attention to what other women are wearing, especially in a business setting, and you may be able to figure out what you need to discard and what you need to keep and enhance with accessories. Look at the female politicians. Hilary went from dumpy, frumpy to chic as soon as she hired a fashion consultant to help her, but she didn’t raise her hemline or show any more skin that she ever did. You might look into that, depending on your income. It may help to watch some of the fashion makeover shows, too. Look at Susan Boyle for a real transformation from dumpy and old-fashioned to chic. I assure you that you can dress conservatively –decently– without looking frumpy or old-fashioned.
John asks…
What is the difference between quick cooking and old fashioned oats?
I am making a dessert that calls for quick cooking oats in the crust, and I only have the old fashioned kind. Can I use them instead?
admin answers:
I am a former chef and use both, I make my daily oatmeal with the the quick ones, they take 3-5 minute to cook, for baking I prefer the old fashion, they have nuttier taste and hold up better to long cooking and in baking, they take for porridge in the morning about 10-15 minutes to cook.
The main difference is the quick oats have had a steaming and drying before processing and rolling this just allows them to cook faster, there is a type from Scotland and Ireland a pin oatmeal which is not rolled but cut or broken, these take 30-40 minutes as they are whole grain and are full of fiber.
